Determination of Soil pH
The pH of soil is an important chemical property that indicates whether the soil is acidic, neutral or alkaline. The term pH represents the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration present in a solution. In soil chemistry, pH is used to describe the level of acidity or basicity of soil. Soil pH strongly influences the availability of nutrients and the overall fertility of soil.
Different crops grow best at different pH ranges. For example, most agricultural crops grow well in slightly acidic to neutral soil. If the soil becomes too acidic or too alkaline, plants cannot absorb nutrients effectively even if those nutrients are present in the soil. Therefore, determining soil pH is an essential step in soil analysis.
The pH scale generally ranges from 0 to 14. A value of pH equal to 7 indicates neutral soil. When the pH is less than 7, the soil is acidic. When the pH is greater than 7, the soil is alkaline. Acidic soils contain a higher concentration of hydrogen ions, whereas alkaline soils contain higher concentrations of hydroxide ions or basic salts.
The mathematical expression for pH is given as:

pH = -\log [H^+]
$$
Where $[H^+]$ represents the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution.
In soil analysis, the pH of soil is usually determined using a pH meter with a glass electrode. The pH meter measures the electrical potential developed due to hydrogen ion activity in the soil suspension and converts it into pH value.
Procedure
- A representative soil sample is collected and air-dried.
- About 10 g of soil is taken in a clean beaker.
- Distilled water is added to the soil sample, usually in the ratio of 1:2.5 (soil : water).
- The mixture is stirred thoroughly to form a soil suspension.
- The suspension is allowed to stand for some time so that soluble components dissolve in water.
- The electrode of the pH meter is inserted into the suspension.
- The pH value is recorded directly from the pH meter display.
Classification of Soil Based on pH
- pH below 6.5 – Acidic soil
- pH between 6.5 and 7.5 – Neutral soil
- pH above 7.5 – Alkaline soil
